My Notes about Corpse Craft

In the unending sea of match-3 clones, Corpse Craft is living (?) proof that it is still possible to thoroughly innovate in a casual game while still preserving established game mechanics that people are already familiar with. Corpse Craft can be described as a multitasking game that combines SameGame and real-time strategy. However, unlike usual Flash multitasking games that artificially make the player juggle two or more different game mechanics at the same time, Corpse Craft manages to make the two seemingly unrelated genres work together harmoniously.

The game itself is primarily a simplified form of real-time strategy, where you build units and send them to your opponent. Naturally, unit-building requires having resources, and this is where the match-3 mechanic comes in. Each color in the match-3 board represents a resource type (4 colors / resource types in all), and it is your task to play the match-3 game well in order to come up with the right amounts of each resource. Each type of unit (there are 5 that I am aware of) requires a different combination of resource types, so you should make sure that you're able to click and match every type of color to be able to produce each type of unit, since the units in the game all play a distinct role, and the game's balance requires you to utilize each one of them to efficiently play the game.

The single player mode gradually introduces you to the game, and here you will discover how deep and balanced this casual game is, despite it being very, very easy to learn and pick up. The multiplayer mode allows you to team up and / or compete with up to 4 different players from all over the world, and provides unlimited replay value for the game.

Corpse Craft was nominated for Best Multiplayer Game for 2008 at Jay is Games, and won the Best Commercial Game award at The Mochis. For Flash game developers out there, it is worth noting that Corpse Craft was developed by Three Rings and is hosted on their Whirled platform. Corpse Craft uses revenue-generating methods which unfortunately are not yet widely used by independent developers at the moment, such as microtransactions (for example, to unlock game modes). Based on the metrics available at the Whirled site, the way Corpse Craft generates revenue for its developers seems like a viable way of making money with Flash games, so you should definitely treat Corpse Craft as a case study in Flash game monetization.

About this site
Welcome! My name is Chuck Arellano, and making simple computer games is my hobby. I post the games that I make here, as well as some other games that I like which were made by other people. I hope to add a new game to this site everyday, and to upload my own game every week. Currently, I'm focusing on making games using the Adobe Flex SDK, but I also make games using Pygame. You can read more about it at my game programming blog. I hope you enjoy your stay here, and I would love to hear your comments and suggestions!
